We are looking for a talented Technical Co-Founder / Software Engineer to join Wekeza, Africa’s first equity crowdfunding platform. We’re enabling great businesses in East Africa to succeed through equity crowdfunding and as a Lead Software Engineer at Wekeza, you have the opportunity to define and build how Wekeza’s soon to be launched equity crowdfunding platform will exist.

What we're offering:

The option to work remotely from which ever city you are based in

At Wekeza, our policy is to employ the best qualified people and provide equal opportunity for the advancement of employees including promotion and training and not to discriminate against any person(s).

Who we are:

Wekeza means “To Invest” in Swahili and our goal is to democratize investment in Africa by connecting regular, diaspora investors to growing small/medium size enterprises in Africa via an Equity Crowdfunding platform. Wekeza enables everyday investors to invest alongside venture capitalists and professional investors in high growth SME’s in Africa. Wekeza is supporting SME’s which employ 90% of the continent to raise the funds they need to grow their businesses.

We are currently in the MVP Stage of our product development. Please be advised that the market we plan to launch will be in North America, followed by Europe and as such the successful candidate will need to be able to work remotely.

What you will be doing:

To help us continue our growth and our expansion into new markets, we need a Technical Co-founder who will move quickly to meet Wekeza’s ambitious plans. This is more than just a coding role. As the Technical Co-founder you will be involved in key discussions around the architecture, design and implementation of the core investment logic which powers Wekeza, working on things such as refactoring the pricing logic to support new ideas or adding currency handling

Day to day, you will:

o Work closely with the broader team to gather insights and requirements to help refine and refactor our system, APIs and data integrations. E.g. this could involve looking at how investments complete and optimising that process.

o Develop our API to serve the needs of web and mobile.

o Evolve our backend tooling and frameworks to increase development performance and the stability of our systems.

o Identify flaws in our systems, and work with the team to remedy them, and write tests to ensure that they don't re-appear.

o Work with the DevOps team to build and approve new CI pipelines that support our testing and code quality strategy.

o Working with people across the company to identify opportunities to develop products and shape ideas with data.

Tech stack

You will mainly be working in PHP. Client side we plan to use Angular, Vanilla.js and are focusing on React. We're advocates of using the right tools for the right job, which means you will also be expected to make suggestions if you think it isn’t a fit.

What we're looking for:

o Someone passionate about using tech to overcome the societal and economic challenges facing emerging markets such as Africa

o A developer with backend systems experience, perhaps you worked on a core external API or key business logic.

o HTML/CSS, Javascript

o Swift iOS

o An understanding of data structures, data modelling and data migration

o A good understanding of API design, including OAuth, permissions using scopes, includes, and transformations.

o Code design that is extensible, and able to adapt to the future needs of the business.

o A strong grasp on developing asynchronous systems using queuing software.

o You write clean, well-tested code, and take responsibility for your work all the way to release.

o You like to keep abreast of new technologies and how they might apply to problems we are working on.
